Back Pain Clinic Cambridge

Back and neck pain are one of the most common problems encountered by physiotherapists.

The spine is the work horse of the body, supporting our head to our pelvis. Our lifestyles and increased sitting times lead to postural strains and pains. We treat all conditions from simple back pain, degenerative disc disease, spondylosis, sciatica, to post surgeries e.g. discectomy, laminectomy.

Our physiotherapists will carefully assess your signs and symptoms and then discuss with you a plan of treatment. The therapist will liaise with your GP or Consultant as required so that the best possible outcome is achieved.

Treatments for neck and back pain include mobilisations, exercises, taping, advice and postural education.

We will also work with you to look at the long-term management of your pain. This may involve developing a stretching and core strengthening maintenance programme as well as advising you on activities and returning to sports and things you love to do!

We also provide physiotherapy, acupuncture, orthopaedics and sports injury clinic services in Cambridge.

Areas of Back Pain

Upper back

Pains in the upper back typically present as stiffness or aching and are localised in the area between the neck and rib cage. The cause is most often related to posture, however in more extreme cases can be linked to scoliosis.

Middle back

Pain in the middle of the back typically occurs between the rib cage and lower back. This type of back pain is mostly associated with stiffness and restricted movement and is usually caused by an injury, strain or possibly a herniated disk.

Lower back

Lower back pain can happen anywhere between the lower rib cage and the top of the legs. Often affecting mobility, this particular type of back pain has symptoms that include both sharp pains and dull aches.

Causes of Back Pain

There are many factors that can play a role in creating pain and discomfort in your back. Poor posture, seating position and choice of chair, and lack of activity can often be significant contributors, as well as more serious and apparent causes such as injury or chronic conditions.

Work Environment

Many of us spend the majority of our lives working hard, often sitting stationary in an office or in a car seat for extended periods of time. Over time, this can cause pain, typically due to an ergonomically inappropriate chair or a workstation positioned too low or too high. Your choice of mattress and sleeping position can also have an impact. A mattress over a decade old for instance, may require replacement to provide the support you need.

Lifestyle Choices

Small things can have a large impact, especially when it comes to health and lifestyle habits we may pick up. Smoking reduces blood flow, lowering the circulation to the back and neck, potentially increasing discomfort and stiffness. Body weight and BMI can be a huge factor, as excess body weight puts extra strain on the spine, which can cause pain and other conditions to develop. Sleep health can also affect the condition of your back, as restless nights can lead to unnatural movement, further increasing the chances of minor injury or the development of painful symptoms.

Medical Conditions

Back pain can have a large number of medical causes, both from existing conditions or from physical trauma or injury. Conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis or spinal abnormalities can cause pain, tightness and lack of mobility. Injuries can also cause various spine and neck injuries such as muscle strains, fractures or herniated discs.

Regular Exercise

A lack of regular physical activity can increase the chances of a spinal injury or discomfort. Small amounts of physical exercise or regular movement can be hugely beneficial in reducing the possibility of developing further symptoms like tightness or pain by strengthening the core muscles that support the spine. Individuals leading a non-active lifestyle may find themselves particularly susceptible to pains in the neck and back.
